Review: Skinfood Salmon Brigthening Eye Serum

Hello! ~ It doesn't happen too often that I get my hands on Skinfood products I dislike, but this is one of the cases: I am going to review the Skinfood Salmon Brigthening Eye Serum for you. I bought this because I saw a some random person's comment in some random blog how this product supposed to be awesome and, since I usually like Skinfood products quite a lot, brought it without further investigating. Big mistake.
But let us start with the basics: Skinfood usually doesn't have too awesome packing designs, but this is especially bad. The product contains 30ml and the container is just unnecessarily huge and clumsy looking. The label is supposed to look like it was some kind of handmade paper, but it just makes the stuff on it hard to read. Also, it is impossible to tell how much product there is left in the container, because it is rather light and feels quite empty to begin with (this is what I mean by unnecessary huge. The container feels like there was just half of it filled with product). The only good thing is that it is a pump dispenser, which is quite hygienic in opposite to for example pots.

The huge mistake here was that I mistook the term "Brightening" for something that is meant to actually reduce dark circles, not as what you commonly know from BB Creams as "whitening". Because "Whitening" in BB Creams usually mean there is arbuting in the product - an ingredient that does nothing but bleach your skin. But that's sadly exactly this - the Skinfood Salmon Brigthening Eye Serum contains arbuting and has the purpose of bleaching the skin under your eyes. Why they used the term "brightening" instead of the usual "whitening" I don't know. Maybe because "whitening" would make everyone think about how stupid having the area around your eyesbeing  whiter than the rest of your skin would actually be.

In most cases, the dark circles under the eyes are blood vessels that can be seen through the skin, because  skin is the most thinnest under our eyes. Anything that makes your skin pale, like fatigue, makes your dark circles much more noticeable! In addition to this shadowing can also contribute to the dark color under the eyes for people with a deep-set bone structure. Sometimes dark circles are called by puffy eyes, when the area under your eyes is swollen, thus castings shadowns underneath. Again, anything that makes you paler, will make the contrast caused by shadows even stronger and make your dark circles appear darker! Therefore anything that makes the skin under your eyes even lighter, makes your your dark circles more prominent! So, bleaching the area around your eyes therefore just makes your dark circles more prominent!

The product also contains salmon role and salomon oil. At least salmon oil is a nutritional supplement which supports skin structure, so the Skinfood Salmon Brigthening Eye Serum is supposed to do something else besides just bleaching your skin. But I could really, absolutely do without the whineting!

The texture of the serum is like a liquid cream, but sadly takes a while to be absorbed by your skin, so I can never use BB Cream right over it, but always have to wait a while. If I use just the slightest amount too much of this product, it will make my BB Cream under my eyes cake unpleasantly. So, not only the function is not good, but also the application. The only thing I really like is the scent. Not sure what it is, it does not seem familiar, but it is really pleasant.

I used this product for maybe 3 or 4 weeks now, but I cannot say that I saw any noticeable effect at first. My skin is already very pale to begin with, I guess it just does not get any paler. But then I went on holidays, got a slight tan and, upon returning home, noticed that the area under my eyes appeared indeed lighter than the rest of my face, even though I had not even been using the product during that time. I think it looks quite stupid, pretty much like I feared and would never use this product again.

  1. Thanks for the review! i have the skinfood salmon concealer. I did know there were other products of this line, but I haven't tried them. I think I will no try them since I don't think dark circles can be removed so easily, I'll just stick on concealers and try to have a healthy life^^.

  2. Well, I'am very happy of my skintone (a little bit latin like) and I really don't want to brighten it up, so i'm always searching for cosmetics without this feature. ;)

  3. I think this product is rather useless if one's dark circles r caused by blood vessels

  4. That picture of the salmon actually creeps me out LOL. I do like that pump idea, if only the container was clear right? I have yet to come across a good eye serum yet that worked, so I tend to use more eye masks and I hate the face eye serums can take a bit of time to absorb.

  5. Many people use 1 shade lighter concealer for under their eyes so maybe that was the idea of the brand but it went horribly wrong. I don't see why would I use something with whitening properties near my eyes. Skin there is very sensitive and this can only cause you trouble. Nice review! Now I know I should definitely not buy this eye cream.

  8. I agree! Face Serums are so important to use! I've noticed a somewhat dramatic change in the fine lines around my eyes since I started using the Lady Soma Renewal Serum (no, I don't use a separate eye cream). They are smoother and much less noticeable. The few age spots I've developed seem to be lighter. Overall, looking at my face in the mirror now, I sometimes have to do a double-take because my skin looks so much better and brighter.
